How to Select the Right Drill Bit for Use?
Release time :
Oct 22,2025
Source :
By integrating formation characteristics, bit type, and parameter adjustments, drilling efficiency can be significantly enhanced while extending bit lifespan.
Core Principles for Drill Bit Selection
Formation Hardness Matching
Extremely Soft Formations (SS): Such as clay and mudstone. Prioritize 19-tooth PDC bits or flat-face bits.
Soft to Medium-Hard Formations (S-MH): For sandstone, limestone, etc., recommend 16-tooth PDC bits or roller cone bits (I-series 1-3).
Hard Rock Formations (H-EH): For quartzite, igneous rock, etc., require 13-tooth PDC bits or segmented roller cone bits (I-series 5-8).
Bit Type Characteristics
PDC Bits: No moving parts, suitable for continuous drilling with high mechanical penetration rates, particularly effective in soft to medium-hard formations.
Flap Bits: Crush rock through rolling action, suitable for hard rock and alternating soft/hard formations, but require wear monitoring.
Auger Bits: Highly efficient in clay layers; require roller cone bits in gravel layers.
Operational Parameter Adjustments
Rotational Speed: Reduce speed in hard rock (e.g., 30 rpm); increase to 50 rpm in soft formations.
Drill Pressure: Apply high pressure (e.g., “heavy pressure”) in hard rock; use light pressure with high RPM in soft rock.
Water Flow: Reduce water flow in hard rock to prevent rock powder adhesion; increase water flow in soft rock to aid cuttings removal.
By integrating formation characteristics, bit type, and parameter adjustments, drilling efficiency can be significantly enhanced while extending bit lifespan.
